Behind the Scenes of a Successful Chamber Lunch and Learn Event in South Dakota

Nobody sees the hours before the applause. That’s the truth behind every presentation and every packed room. A few weeks ago, I decided Dakota Intelligence would host a Chamber Lunch and Learn event in Mitchell, South Dakota. The goal was clear: bring local business leaders together, share valuable insights about AI, compliance, automation, and surveillance, and create something memorable. What followed was one of the most intense and rewarding projects I’ve tackled since starting this company.

Preparing the Foundation

The first step was straightforward: build a solid presentation. I created a PowerPoint deck packed with 40 minutes of content covering hallucinations in AI, compliance challenges, automation benefits, surveillance issues, and Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) programs. The slides were detailed and informative, something I was proud to share.

But as the event approached, I realized something important. A traditional slide deck might not be enough to engage this audience fully or provide lasting value. I wanted attendees to walk away with more than just notes. I wanted them to have a resource they could revisit and share with others.

Pivoting to an Interactive Experience

At the last minute, I made a bold decision: ditch the slides. Instead, I built a fully interactive, branded learning hub. This hub included everything from the deck and more. It was designed to be accessible on any device and easy to share with colleagues and bosses who couldn’t attend.

The Dakota Intelligence Learning Hub went live at learn.dakota-intelligence.com. It became the centerpiece of the event, allowing attendees to explore the material at their own pace, ask questions, and dive deeper into topics that interested them most.

Overcoming the QR Code Challenge

One unexpected hurdle was introducing QR codes to a rural South Dakota audience. Asking a room full of Mitchell business owners to scan a QR code in 2026 still felt like a small adventure. Some hesitated, some needed help, but eventually, everyone got connected.

This moment highlighted why Dakota Intelligence exists: meeting people where they are. It’s about bridging gaps, whether technological or educational, and making complex ideas accessible to all.

Real-Time Engagement and Feedback

As I spoke, I could see attendees navigating the hub in real time. They were engaged, curious, and actively participating. It didn’t look like a startup’s first event; it looked like a polished seminar from a company with years of experience.

But Dakota Intelligence has only been around since March. The success came from late nights, quick pivots, and a willingness to try something new in a community that values personal connection and practical solutions.

Lessons Learned from the Event

This event taught me several valuable lessons that any business owner or organizer can apply:

  • Be ready to adapt: The shift from slides to an interactive hub made all the difference. Flexibility can turn a good presentation into a great experience.

  • Know your audience: Understanding the local culture and technology comfort levels helped me prepare for the QR code challenge and ensured everyone could participate.

  • Create lasting value: Providing a resource that attendees can revisit and share extends the impact of your event beyond the room.

  • Engage actively: Real-time interaction keeps people interested and makes the learning process more effective.

Why This Matters for South Dakota Business Owners

If you’re a business owner in South Dakota wondering whether AI and related technologies are practical for your company, this event is a clear example of what’s possible. You don’t need to be a tech expert to start building something real. You need the right tools, the right approach, and a willingness to learn.

The Field Reports from Dakota Intelligence are designed to show you what real looks like from the inside. They provide practical insights and examples that help you understand how AI can fit into your business.
